blogsong #5: The City by Night

This song is about, as you might have guessed, Amsterdam by night. Again, lots of it is based on true facts, but let me state thing clearly: Marleen is a fictional caracter! Most people ask about her, but intentionally I wrote her name without the capital letter M, as she stands for 'meisje' or girl, in Dutch.
Another thing worth mentioning, I'd say, is the break, which was added later on. I wrote it about my good friend Brendan who had just moved to Amsterdam from abroad. Live can be simple, getting anew, into town...
The song is played with a nice uptempo Bossa Nova beat, and it goed like this:

The City by Night (Amsterdam)
Words & music by Joris Kleverlaan

Hello Paradiso,
and how are you doin’?
We spend the night in Amsterdam.
First some beers,
and then some dancing,
let’s see if we get lucky tonight.

chorus:
Amsterdam, Amsterdam,
the city by night.
Amsterdam, Amsterdam,
a city so bright.

marleen, marleen,
I watch you asleep.
You seem to be smiling,
but I rather weep.
In the morning
after our night together
I’m gonna have to tell you
this is not gonna last forever

chorus

Break:
Get on the bike,
and smoke all night.
Never mind the cops.
Get on the bike,
and drink all night
Enjoy the lot of…

chorus
